In this blog post, we’ll provide you with a detailed breakdown of each turn phase and the actions a player can take during them.

Duel Turn Structure

A typical turn in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG is divided into six phases, each with its unique characteristics and opportunities for action:

1. Draw Phase

  • Player’s Turn: This phase is the first part of a player’s turn.
  • Action: During the Draw Phase, the active player must draw one card from the top of their deck. This is mandatory and cannot be skipped.

2. Standby Phase

  • Player’s Turn: This phase immediately follows the Draw Phase.
  • Action: The Standby Phase is often used for resolving specific card effects. Some cards have effects that activate during this phase.

3. Main Phase 1

  • Player’s Turn: This phase comes after the Standby Phase.
  • Action: During Main Phase 1, the player can perform various actions, including:
    • Summoning Monsters: The player can Normal Summon or Set one monster from their hand in face-up or face-down position.
    • Playing Spell and Trap Cards: The player can play Spell Cards and Set Trap Cards from their hand onto the field.
    • Activating Monster Effects: Some monsters have effects that can be activated during this phase.

4. Battle Phase

  • Player’s Turn: The Battle Phase occurs after Main Phase 1.
  • Action: The Battle Phase is the primary phase for attacking your opponent’s monsters and Life Points. The player can take the following actions:
    • Declare Attacks: The player can declare attacks with their monsters, targeting either the opponent’s monsters or their Life Points.
    • Activate Quick-Play Spell Cards and Fast Effects: Certain Spell Cards and monster effects can be activated during this phase to affect the outcome of battles.
    • Damage Calculation: The game calculates battle damage during this phase.

5. Main Phase 2

  • Player’s Turn: This phase follows the Battle Phase.
  • Action: Similar to Main Phase 1, the player can perform actions like:
    • Summoning Monsters: If the player has not already Normal Summoned a monster during their turn, they can do so now.
    • Playing Spell and Trap Cards: The player can play additional Spell Cards and Set Trap Cards during this phase.
    • Activating Monster Effects: If the player has not already activated a monster’s effect, they can do so now.

6. End Phase

  • Player’s Turn: The End Phase is the final phase of a player’s turn.
  • Action: During the End Phase, various effects are resolved, and certain conditions are checked, depending on the game state and card effects. Some examples of actions include:
    • End of Turn Effects: Some cards have effects that activate at the end of the turn.
    • Check for Continuous Effects: Certain card effects have continuous duration and may need to be checked at the end of the turn.
